If you’re planning a trip to Ischia, then you’re probably looking for a tranquil place to unwind and take a pause from the stresses of daily life. The green island is a popular choice thanks to its relaxed atmosphere, thermal springs and long sandy beaches. Ischia has a laid-back, local vibe that encourages inward meditation rather than an emphasis on outward appearance, unlike nearby Capri. This is a place people come to get away. And the most picturesque place to escape just might be the Club Scannella beach resort.
Located at the southwestern corner of the island, Club Scannella can only be reached by walking down hundreds of steep stairs or by a short boat ride from nearby Sant’Angelo. The family-run hotel and beach club is set within Ischia’s rocky coastline and this remote position is turns out to be its greatest asset. With no phone reception down by the water and an enforced silent bathing area, the only sounds around are the waves lapping at the rocks and seagulls flying overhead. The beach club has two cool salt-water pools and a warm swimming pool located beside the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. The protected cove is also a perfect place for snorkeling and the resort also arranges fishing and scuba-diving for intrepid guests. For those who prefer to lounge, yoga and massages are offered as well.
Club Scannella is also a hotel with 20 bright rooms that look out onto the sea and an all-day restaurant specialized in local cuisine. The menu is extensive, with plenty of fresh fish dishes, a wide array of salads and tantalizing pastas – classic and non. I opted for the paccheri con zucchine which came served in the pan, much to my delight: the pasta was sautéed with an egg, cheese, pepper and a splash of fragrant white wine for an unusual twist. It was hard to choose between all the tasty options (spaghetti aglio, olio e limone also caught my eye) but the best part of the restaurant is undoubtedly the view of the sea below.
Via Scannella Mare, 1, 80075 Panza (Forio d’Ischia)
You can reach Club Scannella by taxi from Forio or Panza (be prepared to walk down many steep steps) or by boat from the port of Sant’Angelo. Sun beds are €15 each and should be reserved in advance.
